FARMING SYSTEMS AND LIVELIHOODS ANALYSIS
Background:
The goal of agricultural research and development is to improve the livelihoods of the resource poor farmers through increased food security and better income generation opportunities. Uganda’s agricultural system is dominated by smallholders and consists of interlinked and interactive sub-systems: the household as a decision-making unit; the farm production elements of crops and livestock; and off-farm component. In order to achieve the development goals, interventions that consider the farmers’ circumstance have to be designed while keeping in mind the interactive nature of agriculture. Farming systems research provides an understanding of the agricultural system and thereby guiding the type of interventions that will address the farmers’ problems and have impact.
Research objectives:
- To establish production and utilization baseline parameters
- To establish farmers’ needs, constraints and opportunities that need research intervention
- To understand the socio-economic aspects influencing the farming sub systems
Achievements:
a. Outputs:
- Farmers’ crop and livestock production constraints and opportunities determined
- Reconnaissance surveys were conducted in Bundibugyo and Buliisa districts
- Pre-testing of FSLA quantitative survey tools conducted
- The farming sub-systems in the MWZ established
- Socio-economic profiles of Bundibugyo and Buliisa districts developed
b. Outcomes:
- Farmers’ crop and livestock production output increased
- Increased access of research outputs addressing specific farming sub-systems through technology priority selection
- Increased number of farmers utilizing NARO technologies through field experimentation and monitoring
c. Impacts:
- We anticipate an increase in number of farmers adopting NARO technologies and thus improved food security in Bundibugyo and Buliisa districts
d. Technology/Result dissemination:
- Reconnaissance survey reports for Bundibugyo and Buliisa were developed and guided the design of survey tools
Research activities in progress:
- Farming systems and livelihoods analysis study in Bundibugyo and Buliisa districts: survey conducted and draft report is being prepared
- Enhancing participatory market research and community agro-enterprise development in the zone: Hoima, Masindi, Kibaale, and Buliisa
