Welcome to the paradise on earth and Pearl of Africa. Uganda is a land locked country bordered by Sudan in the north, Kenya in the east, Tanzania in the south, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo in the south west Well positioned at the equator,  Uganda is well known for its good climate, and hospitality of her people. It is privileged to host the 3rd Symposium of the Sunflower for Developing Countries.

The National Organising Committee and the Technical Committee are in place and arrangements are proceeding well. This announcement is geared to illicit your reaction to express interest in attending the Symposium.

The announcement has been posted on this website (www.naro.go.ug/conference/sunflowersymposium) and on the International Sunflower Association (www.cetiom.fr/isa). The form for expression of interest can be downloaded from these sites for you to complete and return either by e-mail or fax. The Symposium will include key note speakers, poster presentations, plenary speakers on important aspects of Sunflower Research and Development, and a well arranged exhibition and tour. There will be arrangements for accompanying persons.

For the time being please fill the interest form to let us know your interest to attend and how you wish to participate:-

a)     Interest in attending the 3rd Sunflower Symposium in Developing Countries, 10-14th  December, 2007 Entebbe , Uganda

b)     Interest in hiring a stand for exhibition or making a commercial presentation.

c)     Interest in presenting a poster, attend the workshop, and have your paper published in the proceedings.

If you have indicated interest in presenting a poster and writing a paper, to be included in the proceedings, you will be sent instructions on how to proceed to upload your paper.

Date and venue

The symposium will take place in Imperial Resort Beach Hotel in Entebbe , December 10-14th, 2007 .  The hotel is located at the shores of Lake Victoria .

Weather

Uganda enjoys a good climate all the year round with average temperatures of about 25?C. The climate varies with altitude which ranges from 610m asl in the rift valley to well above 4324 in asl on Mt. Elgon and Mt. Rwenzori . Mean annual rainfall ranges from 510mm in north east of the country to 2160mm in the islands on Lake Victoria . Take time and experience this invigorating climate. During December, there will be no need for heavy clothes. Light, summer clothing will do.  

Participation fee:

  • Foreign participants US $ 300
  • Local participants US $ 100

This will cover proceedings and meals during the symposium and not accommodation.

Accommodation

The main accommodation will be at Imperial Resort Beach Hotel ranging from US $ 110 – US $ 700 a night including bed and break fast. There are other hotels in Entebbe charging between US $ 30 – US $ 100 a night bed and break fast. Details of hotels will appear in the 2nd announcement.

Visas

Ugandan visas are issued at various Uganda missions abroad and also at entry/exit points e.g. Entebbe International Airport , Busia, Malaba, Katuna etc. Those wishing to get visas on arrival should indicate to the secretariat ahead of time.

D: Participants Programme

Conference

Participants willing to present a communication are invited to submit their abstracts by 1st September 2007 .  You should also indicate whether you want to present orally or by poster.

Scientific Programme

The scientific program will consist of several sessions, each having a plenary speaker, a poster session, exhibitions and guided tours.

 

The scientific topics are organised as follows:

  • Agronomy, physiology and production practices for Sunflower in Developing Countries.
  • Genetic Development of Sunflower in Developing Countries
  • Breeding and cultivar choice of sunflower in developing countries.
  • Sunflower genetic resources and exchange in developing countries.
  • Seed production and seed policies
  • Nutrition
  • And marketing of sunflower products in developing Countries
  • Bio diesel, oil and grain quality use in developing countries
  • Sunflower Entomology in developing countries
  • Sunflower Pathology in Developing Countries

Language and proceedings

The official language will be English. Those wishing to have their papers published in the proceedings should arrange to hand in their papers by 1st October, 2007 .

ABSTRACT PROPOSAL

It is a must that you send your summary if you want your paper in the proceedings an also if you are to present a paper during symposium. The summary should be 200-300 words that will include: the title and authors, the aims of the study material and methods, results of the study. Send the summary to the symposium host secretariat by email.
